CrockPot Dirty Rice

Ingredients

  • 1 lbs Ground Beef
  • 1 Beef Kielbasa Sausage
  • 1/3 cup Minced Celery
  • 1 Red Bell Pepper
  • 1 Green Bell Pepper
  • 1/4 cup Minced Red Onion
  • 16 oz Brown or White Rice
  • 1 tsp Minced Garlic
  • 1/2 tsp Black Pepper
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Basil
  • 1 tsp Cayenne
  • 1 tsp Cumin
  • 1/2 cup Apple Juice
  • 1/2 cup Water

Directions

  • Brown both meats in a separate pan until almost no pink is left. Add sausage and ground beef to the crockpot. Set to HIGH 4hrs.
  • Next, take all bell peppers, onion, garlic and celery, chopped, and add them into the pot. Top with all the seasonings. Let sit for 15 minutes.
  • Add uncooked rice, juice and water to the pot. Once boiling, reduce heat to 8hrs LOW and simmer for 35 minutes.
  • Rice should be fully puffed. Fluff and combine all ingredients by stirring. Serve immediately or set to warm.

Clean Dirty Rice

I don’t make this often. Cajun and Creole inspired foods aren’t a common occurrence in the DeFelice or Walker households (at least, the ones I was a part of). When they’re made, I remember them not being the best received, even though they tasted fine, great even.

Maybe it’s the kid taste buds (Which Are Totally A Thing) or something. I’ve made this before, sans the sausage, and my husband then boyfriend muffled a praise through full bites of food. So, I had to pay myself on the back.

It has been a minute since I last combined these seasonings and beef products into one.

Does it taste great? Absolutely.

Is it a dish that will be a recurrence monthly like my best mom’s dishes cycle through? Nah.

It’s not my fav! You’ll see me chomping at the bit to get some sushi or pizza or fries. But you ask if I want this or them? Tsk ahh yeaahhh, I’m going to have to go with my comfort foods first.

Don’t let that deter you from experimenting and experiencing other foods like this. Believe it or not, almost every culture has a rice dish, but not a lot of people know what they are. This one is accessible and cheap.

Try it out on a Monday that you don’t feel like doing much in the kitchen. I used four things and two of them are the crockpot and a serving spoon. You’ll make, babes. Promise.
